Bug Hotel

My son absolutely loves being outside doing everything from gardening with his Daddy to bird watching and hunting for bugs so I decided it might be fun to make an insect hotel with him.

Bug Hotel

Making the bug hotel was really easy and proved to be really fun. It was so out of Mummies comfort zone as I would usually leave something like this to my husband but I’m so glad I got to do it with my son. I’m not saying it’s the best or most professional looking insect hotel going but we had fun doing it and my toddler still checks it now to see if anything has moved in.

To make the Bug Hotel we used:

  • 3 Terracotta pots
  • Bricks
  • Bits of wood
  • Bamboo
  • Bark
  • Pine Cones
  • Sticks

You can literally use anything but I read that the insects like the pine cones and bamboo as well as the holes in the bricks, that also happened to be what we had lying around in the garage. I am sure there is advice out there on how best to put things together but in all honesty we just had great fun sticking bits of twig and bamboo in all the little holes and foraging around the garden for leaves and bark so to us it never really mattered if it was perfect.

It’s now been a couple of weeks and we have spotted some woodlice and a spider but the fun was really in the making of the bug house and also being able to teach my toddler about mini beasts so I would say this is well worth a go whatever it ends up looking like 🙂
